The White House confirms this morning that President Obama has selected REI CEO Sally Jewell.

On the surface, it appears an odd choice – the CEO of an outdoor equipment company will now be managing our National Parks.

According to the New York Times Jewell worked for Mobil and is a longtime advocate for conservation and outdoor recreation

As a CEO, Jewell has made many contributions to the Democratic Party including $2300 to Obama’s 2008 campaign.

In 2012, Jewell contributed $1500 to the Women on the Road to the Senate Political Action group and $900 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. She donated $1000 to Sen. Maria Cantwell D-Wa. in 2012, as well as Rep. Derek Kilmer D-Wa.

Jewell has also donated to a few moderate Republicans including Rep. Dave Reichert R-Wa. and Sen. Lisa Murkowski R-Ala.
