If he ever had a son, President Obama would not let him play professional football, according to a new interview published Sunday.

“I would not let my son play pro football,” Obama recently said aboard Air Force One in an interview published by the New Yorker.

Obama made the remarks as he watched a recent National Football League game, questioned about the spate of concussions on the gridiron.

The football league’s ratings are at an all-time high, but officials have been on the defensive for brain injuries among players after they retire.

And a judge last week rejected preliminary approval of a $765 million settlement between the league and 4,000 former players.

Obama, an avid sports fan, likes to watch athletic competitions to take his mind off the rigors of his job, aides have said.

And though he bemoaned the violence in football, Obama had no qualms about watching the sport.

"At this point, there’s a little bit of caveat emptor,” he said. “These guys, they know what they’re doing. They know what they’re buying into. It is no longer a secret. It’s sort of the feeling I have about smokers, you know?”
