During a speech at a medal award ceremony Wednesday afternoon, President Obama explained that he was honoring musicians, sculptures, artists, and even special effects artists who “make it look like those planes in space are actually flying like they are.”

As some in the crowd chuckled at his remark, Obama took a moment to defend his statement.

“I’m just saying, I remember when I first saw Star Wars,” Obama said with a grin. “There’s a whole generation that thinks special effects always look like they do today. But it used to be that you'd see like the string on the little model spaceships.”

Star Wars creator George Lucas was one of the featured recipients of a medal during the ceremony.

Obama made his remarks during the 2012 National Medal of Arts and National Humanities medal ceremony.
