Obama: ‘The Romney campaign raises more $$$ than we do’

President Obama warned supporters that Mitt Romney’s campaign is raising more money than he is, and that the gap could sink his reelection.

“The Romney campaign raises more than we do,” Obama said in a fundraising email with “I will be outspent” as the subject line.  “We can be outspent and still win — but we can’t be outspent 10 to 1 and still win.” He noted that the money gap is exacerbated by third party Republican groups campaigning on Romney’s behalf.

Obama then suggested that Romney has more time for fundraisers. “My opponent spent this past weekend at a secretive retreat for the biggest donors to both his campaign and the super PACs that support him,” the president wrote. “I’ve got other responsibilities I’m attending to.”

Ironically, Obama sent out this message in the midst of a two-day, seven fundraiser swing. He held a high-dollar event at a private residence in Weston, Mass, last night, for instance. “Tickets to the event were $17,900 or $35,800 a couple. 100 people are expected to attend,” according to the White House pool report.

He plans to raise about $2.3 million at high-dollar fundraisers in Atlanta and Miami today.

In May, USA Today reported that Obama had attended 191 fundraisers — making him the most dedicated fundraiser since at least Jimmy Carter.
