President Obama has chosen Julia Pierson to be the next director of the Secret Service, making her the first woman to lead the agency, an administration official confirmed to The Washington Examiner.

Pierson is now chief of staff for the Secret Service, which protects the president and first family.

Obama will make the announcement later Tuesday. The position does not require Senate confirmation.

Last year, the Secret Service came under fire when it was revealed that agents had brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms in Colombia ahead of Obama’s visit to the country. Director Mark Sullivan apologized for the incident and ultimately resigned after nearly seven years on the job.
