President Obama this afternoon will nominate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as his next secretary of state, The Washington Examiner confirmed.

The move was widely expected after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice dropped out of the running to become the nation’s top diplomat. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has planned to step down soon after Obama’s inauguration.

Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to cruise through the confirmation process.
