President Obama will meet with Democratic and Republican congressional leaders at the White House Wednesday to discuss the uprisings in Iraq and other foreign policy issues.

“The president will meet with Senate Majority Leader [Harry] Reid, Senate Minority Leader [Mitch] McConnell, Speaker [John] Boehner and Democratic Leader [Nancy] Pelosi at the White House as a part of his ongoing consultations with congressional leadership on foreign policy issues, including the situation in Iraq,” a White House official said.

Obama is weighing whether to approve airstrikes against militants who have taken over multiple cities north of Baghdad. However, the president has insisted that the Iraqi government must first formulate a political solution before he approves any military response in Iraq.

The president has ruled out the idea of combat troops in Iraq but recently sent security forces there to protect the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Republicans have called on the president to do more to combat insurgents who have spread from Syria to Iraq.

“The administration must act quickly to provide assistance to the Maliki government before every gain made by U.S. and allied troops is lost, and before ISIL expands its sanctuary — from which it can eventually threaten the United States,” McConnell said earlier Tuesday.
