Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday will announce the enrollment totals for Obamacare health exchanges, White House press secretary Jay Carney said.
The much-awaited totals will be unveiled at 3:30 p.m. But ahead of the announcement -- and in recent days -- the White House has actively sought to lower expectations about the number of Americans signing up for new health plans.
Carney on Wednesday said the figures would be both “very low” and “lower than anticipated.”
The administration had initially estimated that 500,000 people would enroll in the health program but now concedes that the actual figure will be just a fraction of that projection.
The announcement comes after administration officials who constructed the federal website were grilled on Capitol Hill Wednesday for the problem-plagued rollout of healthcare.gov.
The Obamacare mess has clearly taken a toll on the president’s approval ratings, with a series of recent polls showing his lowest marks since taking office.
