Obamas used ice cream to ease daughters into campaigning

Back before First Lady Michelle Obama launched her healthy kids initiative, the Obamas eased their daughters into campaigning with a steady supply of ice cream.

“Malia and Sasha love New Hampshire,” President Obama recalled during a campaign stop in Portsmouth, N.H., today. “I think the first day of campaigning [in 2007], they got ice cream four times in a row. So they turned to Michelle and me and said, ‘we love this campaigning thing; we want to campaign with you all the time.’”

Ice cream is a campaign trail favorite for the Obamas. Earlier this year, the first lady wrapped up a speech because she saw “four little people who need to get outside and play I see right here. They need some ice cream or something.”

More often, though, she focuses on her plan to promote good health through the Let’s Move! initiative, which The Washington Examiner regards as “a commendable effort to combat childhood obesity.”
