Office Depot's charitable arm is planning to give away 11,000 backpacks to District kids.

The Office Depot Foundation plans to kick off its donations with a Wednesday event on Connecticut Avenue NW. The foundation said the backpacks will go to students who are connected to other non-profit organizations in the D.C. area, as well as schools and government agencies, including the District's Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration.

Office Depot is entering its 12th year of giving away backpacks, and the foundation said that the program will have assisted 2.9 million students nationwide by the end of the year, including 400,000 in 2012.
