HARVEY, Ill. (AP) — Officials in a Chicago suburb say a gunman is barricaded in a home and holding hostages.
Two police officers were wounded by gunfire Tuesday afternoon in the incident after responding to a call of a burglary in progress in the city of Harvey, about 25 miles south of Chicago.
City spokesman Sean Howard tells the Chicago Sun-Times the suspect barricaded himself inside a home after "an exchange of gunfire" that wounded a police officer in the arm. He says the officer was taken to a hospital.
Mayor Eric Kellogg tells WLS-TV that a second officer was shot a short time later and suffered a graze wound to an arm.
Howard says a nearby middle school has been evacuated, but only staff and not students were in the building.
