OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — A group of environmentalists and residents say they oppose bringing a power line carrying electricity from proposed offshore wind turbines on shore at Assateague Island.

Ocean City attorney Hugh Cropper IV told The Daily Times of Salisbury (http://bit.ly/PZvYpw ) that he wrote to Atlantic Wind Connection on behalf of the group. Cropper says they believe the high voltage line would have a catastrophic environmental effect, even if it is buried.

Atlantic Grid Development president Markian Melnyk says his company would prefer to land the transmission line somewhere in or near Ocean City and called a possible site at Assateague Island State Park a "technical alternative." Melnyk says the company is in the information gathering mode for the project and has not proposed using the island.
