After yielding 597 yards and 41 points in a loss last week at Troy, the heat was on the Navy defense facing a Texas State team which had scored 55 points the previous week in a shootout loss to Louisiana Tech.

The Midshipmen defenders responded well in a 21-10 victory, forcing the Bobcats to turn the ball over on downs five times, including their final three possessions.

“Our kids played hard and made plays when we needed them to make them,” Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green said. “Those guys are hard to stop. I’m proud of the way our guys battled.”

On a fourth down field goal attempt in the first half, freshman Kwazel Bertrand anticipated the play and sacked holder Shaun Rutherford for a 10-yard loss. On another fourth down play in the first half, senior Tra’ves Bush knocked down a pass.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore outside linebacker Jordan Drake and sophomore cornerback Parrish Gaines broke up fourth down passes. On another fourth down play, inside linebacker Brye French and Bertrand combined to stop a receiver three yards short.

Navy also did solid work against the run, limiting the Bobcats to 117 yards, and top rusher (and former Navy back) Marcus Curry to 67 yards on 11 carries.
