One person died in a single-vehicle crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, police said.

About 5:15 a.m. Monday, a sedan left the southbound lanes north of Mt. Vernon and hit a tree, U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Brooks said.

The driver died at the scene, and a passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
