Oyster processor, Louisiana state commissioner dies

HOUMA, La. (AP) — Mike Voisin (vwah-ZENH), one of the best-known people in Louisiana's seafood business, has died at a Houma hospital.

Voisin died Saturday in the intensive care unit at Terrebonne General Hospital in Houma from complications of a heart attack suffered last week. Funeral arrangements are pending.

His death was announced on the website of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board.

"Mike Voisin was a tireless champion for Louisiana seafood, and the oyster industry in particular," U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., said in a statement. "His passing leaves a tremendous void in our hospitality industry. "

In addition to being the owner of Motivatit Seafood and chairman of the Gulf Coast Seafood Coalition, Voisin was the founder of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, was the former chairman of the National Fisheries Institute, and was the former chairman of the Louisiana Oyster Task force.

Voisin was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and had lived in Louisiana for the past 38 years. He had owned Motivatit Seafoods Inc. based in Houma since 1971.

"Our whole department is so terribly saddened at the passing of Mike," Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries secretary Robert Barham said in a statement. "On a daily basis, I relied on his extensive knowledge of the coastal environment and seafood industry. No one was more versed on seafood management. It will be virtually impossible to find someone that has the ability, the knowledge and the will to ensure Louisiana remains a leader in the seafood industry."
