A race ended in a hit-and-run crash in Adelphi that critically injured a 21-year-old pedestrian, Prince George's County police said.

About 3:15 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to the 2000 block of University Boulevard East. According to a preliminary investigation, the striking vehicle was seen racing another vehicle near the intersection of University Boulevard East and Riggs Road. A man who was not in a crosswalk was struck as he stepped into the road.

The striking vehicle, described as a gold sedan that might be a Honda, continued eastbound on University Boulevard without stopping. The other vehicle that was seen racing crashed, and its driver was taken into custody, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition as of Sunday evening.

A separate vehicle race in Prince George's County led to a driver's death on Friday, police said. In that incident, one of two Mercedes Benzes that were racing each other struck a Metrobus in Seat Pleasant. The driver of the striking vehicle died.
