Want a gift card? It could be yours if you turn in a firearm.
The Prince George's County Police Department is holding a "Gift Cards for Guns" event on Saturday, during which people can surrender firearms in exchange for Visa gift cards. For every weapon turned in, a citizen will receive a gift card with a value of up to $100, depending on the type of gun.
The initiative aims to help reduce gun violence, police said.
The event is taking place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, located at 6400 Livingston Road in Oxon Hill. People participating in the event should place unloaded firearms in the trunks of their vehicles. Officers will greet people at the entrances to the church parking lots, tell people where to park and remove the weapons.
People can give up both new and used guns, and they don't need to be functional. Ammunition can be turned in as well.
This is the police department's second "Gift Cards for Guns" event, and the NAACP and the Prince George's County Youth Strategies Division are also involved in the initiative. At the first event in June, over 100 gift cards were given out in return for firearms.
