KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — An aid group says fighting in an oil-producing South Sudanese state forced thousands of people to flee into the bush, including patients and medical workers at a hospital.

Doctors Without Borders said in a statement Friday that a team of 30 local staff members, fearing for their lives, were among 240 people who fled Leer Hospital in Unity state.

The aid group said that "reports that fighting was approaching" caused all to flee and there are no longer any patients or staff at the hospital.

South Sudan has been wracked by violence since mid-December as government troops try to quell a rebellion led by a former vice president.

Although the warring factions last week signed a ceasefire deal, mediators report sporadic violations of that truce.
