A pedestrian died after he was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Northeast D.C., police said.

About 11:05 p.m. Tuesday, a black, four-door Dodge Charger with dark tinted windows was traveling quickly in the 3000 block of 20th Street Northeast and then came to an abrupt stop at the corner of 20th Street and Rhode Island Avenue. A female passenger exited the Dodge, and the car sped off and struck 47-year-old John Allan Schmidt, who was walking in the road, D.C. police said.

After hitting Schmidt, the Dodge backed up and the female passenger got back into the car. The Dodge then sped off, heading south on 20th Street Northeast.

Schmidt, of Northeast D.C., was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries on Wednesday.
