A 45-year-old woman laying on a highway was struck and killed by a Culpeper County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler said Deputy Scott Yeiser was responding to a medical emergency call around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when his car hit the woman on U.S. 29, according to Virginia State Police.

The woman, Mary G. Williams, of Culpeper, was laying in the passing lane and wearing dark clothing, Tyler said.

The incident happened about a half-mile from where the original call came from. Police do not immediately know whether Williams was connected to the original call of a person slumped over the wheel of a vehicle.

Police are investigating how Williams got into the road and why she was in the roadway.
