A 55-year-old man has been struck and killed by Montgomery County school bus, officials said.

The incident took place shortly before 6:30 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Clopper and Firstfield roads in Gaithersburg. The pedestrian, George Pezdirtz III, was crossing Clopper Road outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by the bus, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said.

Pezdirtz, who lives near where he was struck, died at the scene.

The school bus' driver was the vehicle's only occupant at the time of the crash, and the bus remained at the scene, Cruz said.
