A 64-year-old North Springfield -area man has been struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Fairfax County, police said.

The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Thursday just west of the Backlick Road overpass in the North Springfield area. An Amtrak train traveling from New York to New Orleans struck the man, who was trespassing at the time because it is illegal to be on the tracks, Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds said.

Fairfax County police are investigating the crash and do not suspect foul play. A police spokesman could not say whether suicide was suspected in the incident.

There were 226 passengers on the train, none of whom reported injuries. The train was delayed for 4 hours and 20 minutes because of the investigation into the incident, Leeds said.
