People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering to help former President George W. Bush find a new dog to replace his dearly departed Scottish terrier, Barney.

PETA will also give Barney his own golden leaf on a memorial tree located in its Norfolk headquarters.

But former first lady Laura Bush has said they aren't ready to replace their beloved pet.

"I think, you know, it always takes a while to get over the loss of a pet. And maybe we'll think about another dog later," Laura Bush told Yeas & Nays on Monday.

"We don't want to encourage them to get a new one immediately," Sarah Preston, a PETA manager, told Yeas & Nays. "We're merely asking that when they do, that they consider adopting instead of purchasing, because ... being such a high-profile family, they can really set an example."

Although Barney, like current first pet Bo Obama, was purebred, Preston said one of every four shelter dogs are actually purebred.
