BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Gary Peters has visited the Woodward Dream Cruise course to promote legislation creating a federal historic vehicle register and document and preserve automotive heritage.

The Bloomfield Township Democrat and U.S. Senate candidate discussed the bill Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham as emergency crews worked to open roads and restore services after Monday's heavy rains and flooding.

Peters says authorities need to focus first on people's safety and says he's working to see if federal recovery aid is available.

Peters is co-chair of the Congressional Auto Caucus and introduced the National Historic Vehicle Register Act of 2014 last month.

The announcement comes ahead of Saturday's 20th anniversary Woodward Dream Cruise. It's expected to draws tens of thousands of classic and vintage cars to the historic route through several communities.
