PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — An Arkansas-based phone company says it's restored service after an outage that blocked calls to offices and businesses in a wide area of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Little Rock-based Windstream Corp. tells Michigan Radio that the service was restored by 3:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Erin Ascione says a computer card failed. She says other factors may have been a fiber optic cable that was accidentally cut by an outside contractor in Wisconsin and another cable cut in Indiana.

Windstream is a popular phone service provider to schools, governments and businesses in Michigan.

The outages affected customers from Oakland County north of Detroit to Kent County in West Michigan.
