Middle school students given ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ word puzzles

Fifty shades of … eighth grade?

Several students at Westmoreland County middle school in Monessen, Pennsylvania, were given “Fifty Shades of Grey” crossword puzzles Monday, according to local news outlet WTAE.

The puzzles contained words like “leather cuffs,” “bondage,” and “spanking,” among others even more inappropriate, according to the Associated Press.

Unsurprisingly, parents like James Carter — whose son and some of his eighth grade classmates received the word scrambles — were furious.

“I asked my son who passed it out, and he said the teacher passed it out,” explained the parent. “I don’t think this is what they should be doing in the eighth-grade level.”

Though Carter visited the school Tuesday to inquire about the puzzles, he was given little information. In fact, school district officials at a school board meeting Tuesday night said they could not disclose the person who distributed the explicit puzzles but insisted an investigation would be conducted.

One member of the school board did admit via e-mail that the distribution of the word scrambles was a “huge but unintentional error.”

“It was a huge but unintentional error and collected from the five students involved as soon as it was realized,” explained board member Roberta Bergstedt. “Unfortunately one copy was taken by a student who then posted it on social media.”

Suuure. Blame it on Facebook and Twitter.
