$20k worth of Terps equipment stolen

Three 22-year-old men who stole more than $20,000 in equipment from the University of Maryland's Varsity Team House building have been arrested, police said.

Igor Rosensteel, of Middle River, Richard Landa, of Freeland, and Ian Hammer, of College Park, each face burglary and theft-related charges, according to University of Maryland police.

Hammer is a Maryland student, but the other two men are not, police said.

The burglaries took place in November and December, police said. During the crimes, the men would force their way into the building and steal athletic equipment, chiefly items from the baseball and lacrosse teams.

Investigators determined that stolen items were being sold on an online auction website.

Inmate fights for own execution

A inmate on death row in Virginia is fighting his former attorneys for the right to be executed next week.

Attorneys who represented Robert Gleason Jr. are asking a federal court in Roanoke to reappoint them to the case and allow them to appeal his death sentence.

Gleason is scheduled to be executed on Jan. 16.

He was serving life when he killed his cellmate in 2009. He vowed to keep killing unless given the death penalty. He strangled another inmate in 2010.

Two injured following police chase

A collision in Herndon after a police chase sent two people to the hospital.

At about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, a Herndon patrol officer tried to stop a SUV for speeding. The SUV ran a red light at the intersection of Dranesville Road and Wiehle Avenue, striking another vehicle and rolling over several times.

The driver and passenger in the SUV were taken to a hospital. No one else was injured.
