Driver falls asleep, kills pedestrian

A pedestrian was killed early Thursday after he was struck by a car whose driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Prince George's County police said Terraine Saunders, 46, was walking on the sidewalk on the 9200 block of Livingston Road in Fort Washington at about 6:30 a.m., when an oncoming green Subaru jumped the curb and struck him. Saunders, of Fort Washington, was pronounced dead at a hospital. A woman who was also on the sidewalk was not injured.

The driver of the Subaru remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police said it appears that the driver fell asleep while driving. The investigation is ongoing.

13th Springfield-area groping reported

A 23-year-old woman was groped in Springfield on Thursday morning, and police believe this is the 13th reported attack in the area that was committed by the same man.

About 9 a.m., the woman was walking on Floyd Avenue near Erving Street when a man ran up behind her and fondled her, according to Fairfax County police officials.

The attacker was described as a Hispanic man who is 5 feet 6 inches tall. He had a close-cut beard and wore faded green pants, a black knit cap and a green jacket.

Thursday's assault is the 13th similar incident that has been reported in the area in the past few months. On Sept. 27, a teenage girl was fondled on Erving Street near where Thursday's incident took place, police said.
