A body was discovered in a Northwest D.C. ravine on Sunday, and police said it may that of a missing 88-year-old man.

Officers found the body at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday in a ravine between East Beach Drive and West Beach Drive, which is in the northernmost area of the District near the Maryland border.

Police and personnel from the medical examiner's officer are working to identify the body, but authorities believe that it may be that of 88-year-old John Matthews. Police said that Matthews was last seen on Dec. 10 leaving his home in the 1400 block of Oglethorpe Street NW, about 2 1/2 miles south of where the body was found.

The case is being classified as an "undetermined death," police said.
