Prince George's County police have identified the man who died Wednesday after a police car struck his vehicle and the county police officer who was driving the striking vehicle.

The deceased driver is 32-year-old James Dejay Toliver, of Upper Marlboro. The officer is Cpl. Michael Mogavero, a nine-year veteran of the department who is assigned to the Special Operations Division traffic enforcement unit, police said.

Early Wednesday morning, Mogavero was responding to an unrelated crash when Toliver's vehicle went into the path of the police car at the intersection of Route 197 and London Lane in Bowie. The police vehicle struck the driver's side of Toliver's car, police said.

Toliver was taken to a hospital, where he died. Mogavero received minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash and to see who was at fault. Deputy Chief Hector Velez said Wednesday afternoon that there is a traffic light at the intersection where the crash took place, but that police were not sure who had the right of way.
