The man killed in a fiery crash in Landover has been identified as 70-year-old Rodwell McNeill Jr. of Glenarden.
McNeill was driving a Mercury Mountaineer at about 12:40 p.m. Monday when the vehicle hit a guard rail on Martin Luther King Jr. highway near the overpass to the Capital Beltway. The sport-utility vehicle careened sideways until it came to a rest on the overpass, and the vehicle caught fire with McNeill inside, police said.
Three Prince George's County police officers and an unidentified civilian tried to rescue McNeill. One of the officers, a 21-year veteran of the department, sustained burns to his hands and face while trying to help McNeill and was taken to a hospital, police said.
Despite efforts to rescue McNeill, the driver died. Police believe that speed was a factor in the crash.
