D.C. police are investigating the death of a woman found during a fire in Southeast D.C.

About 1:35 a.m. Wednesday, police and fire and emergency medical services personnel went to an apartment building on the 1600 block of 17th Street SE. While firefighters were putting out the blaze, they found 71-year-old Mildred Maria Harrison lying on the floor of an apartment, police said.

Harrison had no signs consistent with life and was pronounced dead at the medical examiner's office. Police said that her cause of death is pending an autopsy.
