Katie Couric was one of the most articulate people in the room Thursday night at Habitat for Humanity's Build Hope awards dinner in the National Building Museum, but even a celebrated broadcast journalist can suffer a verbal slip-up every now and then.

Couric encountered more than one tricky phrase as she emceed the event. After struggling to tell the crowd that the housing organization had dedicated its 500,000th home on Oct. 3, she laughed.

"I'm so happy I never had to say that on the 'Evening News,' " she said.

Couric recounted her experience in Port-au-Prince after last year's earthquake in Haiti before tripping up on her words again while introducing the night's honorees, which included Save the Children's Mark Shriver and Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. But her mistakes didn't dent her image with at least one Republican senator in the room.

"This ole Southern boy has always dreamed of meeting Katie Couric," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., one of the event's speakers, who was honored for his international humanitarian efforts. "Habitat for Humanity just granted all of my wishes."
