Pope Francis directed the Vatican to act decisively on clergy sex abuse cases and punish pedophile priests, saying the Catholic Church's 'credibility' was on the line. (April 6)

VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

POPE FRANCIS SAYS HE WILL ACT "WITH DETERMINATION" AGAINST SEX ABUSE CASES IN CHURCH.

BUT SOME ADVOACTES FOR VICTIMS OF CLERGY SEX ABUSE ARE SKEPTICAL.

THE POPE TOLD THE VATICAN TO ACT DECISIVELY ON THE ISSUE... AND TO PUNISH PEDOPHILE PRIESTS.

FRANCIS WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE CHURCH'S "CREDIBILITY" IS ON THE LINE.

SOUNDBITE: Father John Wauck/Opus Dei priest

"I expect Pope Francis to be very open in dealing with problems of sexual abuse and also very aggressive in promoting justice for victims."

AS SOON AS FRANCIS WAS ELECTED POPE LAST MONTH, CLERGY ABUSE VICTIMS CALLED FOR SWIFT AND BOLD ACTION.

SOUNDBITE: Father John Wauck/Opus Dei priest

"He has a long experience as a pastor, as a bishop and as a parish priest. I think that's going to come in very, very handy for him, in communicating not just to the church in general, but above all to local clergy and bishops that need to take this seriously."

FRIDAY'S DEVEOPMENT LEFT VICTIMS ADVOCATES UNIMPRESSED -- SOME SAID IT'S JUST MORE TALK.

THE SCANDAL HAS DRAINED MORALE AND FINANCES FROM CHURCH IN MANY COUNTRIES.

IT'S ALSO DRIVEN COUNTLESS CATHOLICS AWAY - ESPECIALLY IN WESTERN EUROPE.
