PORT FOURCHON, La. (AP) — The Greater Lafourche Port Commission has dedicated Port Fourchon's new $3.4 million Emergency Operations Center.

The building will serve as a response hub during hurricanes or other emergencies that impact the port or oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1xJXzzN ) the center was built with a nearly $1.4 million federal port security grant and $2 million from the commission.

The new EOC building officially opened Thursday.

Port Director Chett Chiasson (SHA'-sawn) says the commission realized that there was a need for a facility where all response agencies, emergency services, industry leaders and incident managers could work collaboratively to manage any type of incident or disaster, and it needed to be separate from the daily operations base.
