What ultimately became of $27,000 worth of mail loaders in Atlanta? The U.S. Postal Service's inspector general is unsure.
The Atlanta distribution center lost at least $26,7000 in equipment that could have been traded, sold, recycled or used in parts. Instead, management marked down the 20 loaders as lost, stolen, destroyed or simply "not found."
"Ultimately, we could not determine what became of this equipment," the IG reported.
The equipment, which is used to load and unload containers the Postal Service uses to move mail, were bought for the Atlanta facility in 1996 for $42,200 each, according to the audit.
Fifteen loaders were also noted as not disposed of properly.
Management at the Atlanta facility promises better training for employees when dealing with equipment that has to be disposed of.
