Power outages minimal in Mid-Atlantic region

REISTERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — A winter storm that dumped up to a foot and a half of snow on the Mid-Atlantic region is not causing major power outages — yet.

Utilities in the Washington area, Maryland and Delaware report minimal outages Thursday morning.

Forecasts had called for a heavy, wet snow and gusty winds, which raised concerns about the prospect of widespread power outages.

However, Maryland Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Angela Bernstein said reports from people digging out are that the snow itself is lighter than anticipated, and the state has not seen big wind gusts.

She cautioned that the area is not out of the woods yet, as snow continues to fall and the potential for power outages remains.
