President Obama will not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at next month's D-Day memorial service in Normandy, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday.

"I don't anticipate a bilateral meeting and certainly none is scheduled," Carney told reporters.

Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and British Queen Elizabeth II are among the Western leaders participating in the memorial service June 6 marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in northern France. The event marks the first time world leaders have gathered since the outbreak of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian defended the Putin invitation. "In these moments of commemoration, it is important that all those who took part should be present," he said.
