One person is dead after his car was struck by a Prince George's County police car being driven by an on-duty officer, police said.

At 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, the officer was responding to an unrelated collision and was driving on Route 197 when his cruiser collided with a civilian car at the intersection with London Lane in Bowie. The police car struck the driver's side of the civilian vehicle, Prince George's County police said.

The driver of the civilian vehicle was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Officers with the police department's collision analysis and reconstruction unit are investigating the cause of the crash and are working to determine who was at fault.
