A Prince George's County police officer shot a 24-year-old Hyattsville man who was armed with a knife, police said.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, authorities received a 911 call from a 21-year-old woman who said her ex-boyfriend threatened her and kicked in her door. She then called a second time to report that the man had assaulted her and left the scene, Prince George's County police said.

An officer assisted the victim in the 3500 block of 55th Avenue in Bladensburg, and the suspect, Damon Earl Wilson, returned with a knife and started cutting his own neck, police said. The officer told Wilson to put the knife down, but he didn't do so. Still armed, he moved toward the officer aggressively.

The officer shot the suspect, and Wilson was taken to a hospital. He was in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon.

A warrant has been obtained for Wilson, charging him with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and other charges, police said.

The officer, a four-year veteran, is on routine administrative leave.
