Deputy Police Chief Lt. Col. Barry Barnard will become Prince William County's acting police chief on Sept. 1, according to a news release.

He will succeed Chief of Police Charlie Deane, who announced last week that he is retiring at the end of the month.

Barnard has been deputy police chief in Prince William since 2009. He joined the police department in 1976, and he served as assistant chief of police from 2000 to 2009 as a commander of both the operations and administrative divisions.

He earned a bachelor's degree in criminology from Florida State University and a master's degree in public administration from George Mason University.
