Mass protests and police clashes this month in Taipei have indefinitely postponed ratification of a trade liberalization deal between the island’s expansion-starved service sector and Taiwan’s larger counterpart China. Hundreds of demonstrators broke into the cabinet offices Sunday occupying parliament for the past week. But any clauses struck between the two sides would require sending the ratification back to Beijing for renegotiation.That’s a big reason Taiwan’s leadership isn’t backing down despite a swelling of protest ranks to tens of thousands around the island over the weekend.
