It’s become a familiar refrain as D.C. United faces yet another dismal Eastern Conference opponent.
“Right now we know that Chicago is desperate for points, so we’ve got to do our best to play our game,” said D.C. head coach Peter Nowak.
The Fire, who knocked D.C. out of last year’s playoffs with a 4-0 thumping at RFK Stadium, have had a terrible start. Long-awaited payback from United could make it worse.
“They took us out in the playoffs last year, pretty much embarrassed us on our home field in front of our home fans,” said goalkeeper Nick Rimando, who is likely to make his first start of the season in one of D.C.’s three games over the next eight days. “I think the fans are looking for a return game, us doing it to them.”
Note: Former United defender Ryan Nelsen trained with D.C. on Monday and Tuesday. The New Zealand native, who helped Blackburn finish sixth in the English Premier League and earn a spot in this year’s UEFA Cup competition, is getting married in Minneapolis on Sunday.
