Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., pushed back against Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., Sunday, for openly criticizing the libertarian streak in the Republican party on government surveillance programs.

Paul unexpectedly criticized Christie’s successful push for significant federal relief funds for his state after Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage last year.

“They’re precisely the same people who are unwilling to cut the spending, and their `Gimme, gimme, gimme – give me all my Sandy money now.’” Paul said, in an interview with the Associated Press. “Those are the people who are bankrupting the government and not letting enough money be left over for national defense.”

Paul added that in regards to surveillance, he believed it was possible to spy on terrorists and protect American liberties.

“I don’t mind spying on terrorists,” Paul explained. “I just don’t like spying on all Americans.”
