Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., continued to counter New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s criticism of the “strain of libertarianism” infiltrating the Republican party in terms of surveillance and national security.

Paul explained on Fox News last night that Christie’s attack was “not very smart,” suggesting that Christie was unaware that Republicans were “in danger of becoming an endangered species.”

“It’s not smart for Republicans to be attacking Republicans,” he added.

Paul added that Christie was cheap for using 9/11 victims to make his point about the importance of national surveillance programs.

“It’s really, I think, kind of sad and cheap that he would use the cloak of 9/11 victims and say, ‘I’m the only one who cares about these victims,’” Paul stated. “Hogwash.”

The Fourth Amendment, Paul explained, was an important part of the Constitution and shouldn’t be ignored.

“People like the governor who are, I guess, flippant about privacy, flippant about the Fourth Amendment and flippant about the Bill of Rights, they do injustice to our soldiers – our soldiers are laying their lives on the line for the Bill of Rights,” Paul said. “So if we’re not going to stand up for the Bill of Rights, and we’re going to say, at all costs I don’t care about liberty, then I think it’s really a mistake and we’ve gone too far.
