STORYLINE:

Police in Iraq said a roadside bomb exploded in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least three people and wounding nine.

The blast comes amid growing unrest in Iraq, with Sunni insurgents pushing further into a province northeast of the capital.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant last week captured a large swath of territory in a lightning offensive in northern Iraq.

The al-Qaida-inspired group has vowed to march to Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf in the worst threat to Iraq's stability since US troops left in 2011.

Their push has largely been unchecked as Iraqi troops and police melted away and surrendered in the militants' onslaught on Mosul and Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown.
