STORYLINE:

Israeli warplanes struck four weapons and militant sites in the Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, in response to a rocket launched from Gaza into Israel on Monday, the Israeli military said.

Locals surveyed the damage in the southern region of Khan Younis, where a large crater was left by the airstrike.

In Jabaliya, in the north of the Gaza Strip, another huge crater was left in the ground, surrounded by industrial equipment and twisted metal.

The airstrikes took place as the Israeli army expanded searches for three missing Israeli teens, who Israel believes the Islamist militant group Hamas kidnapped last week..

Forty Palestinians were arrested early on Tuesday, bringing the total number of Palestinians detained since the kidnapping to over 200, most of them Hamas activists.
