Just hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, flashes of lightning illuminated St Peter's Square on Monday evening.

Lightning pierced the sky behind St Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence, during a thunderstorm.

Some of those in the square at the time cried out in surprise.

The pope's announcement shocked the Vatican and the world.

Not even his closest associates had advance word of the news.
