STORYLINE

Tearful supporters of deceased Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez took to the streets of the capital Caracas on Tuesday, after it was announced that the country's charismatic leader had died.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro confirmed that Chavez had died, but did not say what killed him.

The government had announced the previous night that a new, severe respiratory infection had severely weakened him.

Some supporters gathered near the headquarters of television station Globovision, which has been critical of Chavez in the past, before taking part in a motorcycle procession.
