Redskins select LB Brandon Jenkins

Brandon Jenkins had a choice to make after his junior season: turn pro or return to Florida State. He wanted to improve his draft stock, so he returned to the Seminoles.

And in the first game of the year his season ended, thanks to a Lisfranc injury in the opener.

“Nobody’s life is perfect,” he said. “You have to fail to succeed. You have to go through things that make you stronger and that only made [me] stronger.”

It likely also turned him into a fifth-round pick, which is the round Washington selected him in Saturday. Though he played defensive end at Florida State, the Redskins want him to become a stand-up outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense.

Jenkins said his left foot has fully healed. And he’s not worried about the round where he was drafted.

“I’m in the door and I’ll make sure I stay in the door,”  Jenkins said. “I’m bringing a pass rusher, dependability. Great character on and off the field, a hard worker. They chose the right guy.”

The Redskins don’t have a pressing need for an outside linebacker. But they could use some younger backups behind Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo, who is coming off a torn pec muscle, if for no other reason than to bolster special teams. Jenkins played in punt coverage at Florida State.
